FROM THE PASTOR – SUNDAY, JUNE 13/14:
Dear Fatima Parishioners and friends,
At this time in a normal year many families, including myself would probably be on vacation. This year because everything is turned upside down so to speak, travel outside of the country for the most part is out of the question. While it may be physically possible, the reality of having to quarantine for two weeks upon one’s arrival – and quarantine again upon one’s return for two more weeks makes that idea a non-starter for most people. Even in this country many families would be headed for places like Disney World at this time – but even trips like that are not an option this Summer. Even if I had gone to Ireland this Summer, once I got there, I would be very restricted in the distances I could travel at the present time. In comparison – this time last year I lead a group from this parish on an 11-day tour of Ireland – covering most of the country – without a care or concern – right now that just is not an option. I’m sure many people had overseas trips planned for this Summer – but they have long since been cancelled. Even trips in the Fall of this year to places overseas are still very much in doubt if this will take place or under what restrictions.
So here we are in mid-June having just experienced a tropical depression or mini Hurricane, that we all hope is not a foretaste of the remainder of the Summer/Fall Hurricane season.
This weekend we are celebrating the Feast of Corpus Christi – the Body of Christ – a feast very central and meaningful to Catholics as we come together regularly to receive the Body of Christ every time we celebrate the Eucharist, either on a weekly basis – or for many – also on a daily basis. We are gradually adding back more Masses here at Fatima and today, Sunday, we are now adding a 6:00 pm Mass. Normally the 11:30 am Mass attendance is on the light side during the Summer months as families take vacations – we will hold off on adding that Mass back to the schedule for at least another while. We now offer three weekday masses for our parishioners’ convenience, 6:20 and
8:30 am and an additional Mass each evening at 6:00 pm, except on Mondays when that Mass will be celebrated in Spanish by our Hispanic community.
The “Body of Christ” reminds us that we receive the Body of Christ in the Eucharist – Christ now present to us Sacramentally, no longer present to us physically like he was to the Apostles, but present to us in the form of Bread. It also challenges us who have received Christ into our bodies in Holy Communion, that now we collectively and individually also become the Body of Christ, in the Church, present in the world today. We are all living in very uncertain and challenging times in so many ways, but as the Body of Christ we are called to reflect the goodness and mercy of God in everything we do and say in our daily lives, including what we post on Facebook or any other social media. I sometimes have to wonder about some people and what they post for the world to see. We are challenged by our faith to reflect Christ and his love to the world, in spite of whatever everyone else may do or say.
